Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) when not functioning properly can cause severe jaw or facial pain. The tissues behind the joint (retrodicsal tissues) have nerves that run through them. Once inflamed any slight pressure on the joint and surrounding structures can cause pain.
Prosthodontists are trained to diagnosis and treat Temporomandibular Discomfort (TMD). There are several treatment options depending on the severity of symptoms. All options are generally conservative and do not produce permanent damage to the teeth. Treatment can include the use of an oral appliances, physical therapy, exercise and medication.
It is strongly recommended that patient’s seeking this type of care are assessed by their regular general dentist first to rule out teeth/dental causes to their facial pain. Once these are are ruled out, a referral can be made if further assessment or management is needed.
